Acceptance (CASM 16)

There is a certain level of acceptance we have to acknowledge with anything because we all have limitations. That does not mean we can’t be used or that we are settling. It also is not questioning God’s power because if He wants it done it gets done. Just because you want to fly an airplane or perform surgery does not mean you can. You have to accept that without the education and training that is required you can’t professionally do it. If that is your desire go for it. As we get older our body changes, a few extra aches here and there. Can’t see and hear like we use to. The body may look a little different, that is a part of getting older. With that being said don’t stop taking care of yourself. You aren’t dead so don’t act like it.

Going ahead of God

You may have something in your life that you have been praying for and it has not come into existence. For example, Abraham (Abram) and Sarah (Sarai) desired to have a biological child. They were well beyond child-barring years and decided to take matters into their own hands (Gen 16). In doing so they opened up a can of worms and made a mess of things. God did eventually bless them with their own child (Gen 21), but it was at God’s appointed time. In going ahead of God we create undesirable conditions that are self-inflicted. We cause discord and damage to others because we didn’t want to accept God’s timing, and lives are forever changed.

Opportunities

I don’t minimize the pain or dismiss the seriousness of unanswered desires. I have things I am praying for that have not revealed themselves. It may be time to accept that what we are praying for may look different than what we think. It will still be a great blessing and bring us joy, but we have to be open and let God expand our opportunities. If Abraham and Sarah were with us today maybe they would have considered adoption. Maybe being a wonderful aunt and uncle and a bright light in their niece’s and nephew’s lives would’ve been enough. Fostering might have been the path they were to take. Many children need someone special to love them and provide a safe place.

If you’re single and desire to be married ask the Lord to help you embrace your singleness. Stop hanging out at the hardware and grocery stores in your best dress and heels stalking your potential future husband. Learn to appreciate and enjoy the fellowship of others without focusing on the outcome. God may be blessing you with great friends, networking prospects, and chances to help someone else.

God has unlimited options available. We just have to be open and willing to see and accept them though they may look different. It could be your job/career, ministry, where you go on vacation, or what you should do today. Welcome the opportunity to let God show you multiple avenues of growth, development, and possibilities.

Waiting

I know the dreadful waiting game, but it’s necessary and for our good. Speaking from experience, I wanted something and the next day or hour I changed my mind. The Holy Spirit revealed something to me and if I would have accelerated I would’ve been regretful. Waiting is a time to prepare, educate, and consult the Lord. If you desire marriage read the Bible on how to be a wife and talk to Christian married women. Starting a business read scriptures on honesty, integrity, laziness, and how to treat others. If it’s a job you’re after, update your resume, prepare questions and answers for the interview, and pray. No matter what you’re waiting for study God’s character and how He conducted Himself, that’s pertinent for any desire.

Check your attitude

In these times of unanswered prayers and desires, it’s crucial to check our attitudes and the softness of our hearts. Bitterness and resentment can be quick to replace thanksgiving. We can also become envious of someone that has what we are praying for. Beware of getting wrapped up in self-absorption that you are willing to do anything to make your desire come true. Some things can’t be undone.

In conclusion

Acceptance is not giving up or failure it’s allowing your heart to be open to other views that God is revealing to you. It’s letting go of the one way you think it should be and accepting the unlimited opportunities God wants to share with you. Beware of society’s views and standards that make you feel less than because your life looks different. Be mindful of your own views and standards that they line up with Christ. Don’t fall into the trap of condemning yourself or others for following the path of Jesus. I can testify that my life does not look like what I thought it would be, but I thank God quite often for that. It has become a joy and a delight and I look forward to the plan God has for me.

  1. This is a very good observation. The acts of acceptance will yield a far better outcome than impatience. I’m trusting that I will adhere to every step of the preparation process.

  2. Oh how true this is! Amen! I need to be reminded of this in so many areas! Thank you Carol for being so encouraging. I needed this reminder! I will be praying and asking for direction in many areas. And doing my part and waiting……. After all HE knows!
